Feng Shui for Lovers: How to Create Harmony and Energy in the Spaces of Your Heart and Home
Published in Paperback by Kodansha International (February, 1999)
Author: Sarah Bartlett
Average review score:

Practical approaches in a fun, no-nonsense book
While trying to build my Feng Shui library, I found many books to be either too complicated and wordy or too focused on one particular aspect of the art. Also, most books don't provide simple and practical suggestions that aren't just silly or superstitious cures. While I do believe in the principals of balancing energies and helping the chi to flow through environments, I have a hard time believing in some authors' ideas.

I received this book as a gift and on first impression was prepared to be amused. However, this book is by far the most referred to book in my library! It provides a thorough study of working with the bagua, as well as the elements, colors, and Eastern astrology to create harmony within your home and your life.

It relies a bit on crystals and candles, which I understand is a Westernization of Feng Shui. But it is not heavy-handed with "cures" and delves deeply and comprehensively into the big picture of the art.

Feng Shui: Living in Harmony With the Natural World 2002 Calendar
Published in Paperback by Amber Lotus (09 July, 2001)
Author: Tom Bender
Average review score:

Feng Shui Living In Harmony With Your Calendar
I've been using the 2000 calendar all this past year, and can't wait 'til the new one arrives. The images are beautiful and elegantly composed, some coming from nature, some from man-composed settings. Each month has a topic such as chi, mirrors, health, discernment, silence, intention, creation and truth. Along with the image comes an inspirational quote, and a practical exercise.

As a calendar, it has big boxes to write in, and is easy to read from across the kitchen while talking on the phone and stirring dinner on the stove. It also indicates a wide variety of holidays and has the moon cycle marked with icons.

The Functions of Chords: For Pop, Jazz, and Modern Styles
Published in Hardcover by P & R Press (September, 2002)
Author: Peter Lynn Sessions
Average review score:

Author's Review
This book contains my theory of the information content of chords. In the process, I provide answers to many problems in music theory that have existed for centuries, including consonant and dissonant intervals, roots of chords, the expectation for the root of the next chord and for return to the global tonic chord, and the effects of chord inversions. In addition, the theory identifies several new variables, especially the theory of conflict in chords. Conflict explains why chords such as the augmented triad can sound unresolved even though they consist of consonant intervals.

This theory is fully and fundamentally chromatic. It completely explains the diatonic system of keys within the larger framework of the 12-tone chromatic system. It has extensive analyses of chords in Pop, Jazz, and Modern styles. Anyone who ever wished to know how chords create their effects will want this book.
